Hydrostatic models for the rotation of extra-planar gas in disk galaxies

چکیده
We show that fluid stationary models are able to reproduce the observed, negative vertical gradient of the rotation velocity of the extra-planar gas in spiral galaxies. We have constructed models based on the simple condition that the pressure of the medium does not depend on density alone (baroclinic instead of barotropic solutions: isodensity and isothermal surfaces do not coincide). As an illustration, we have successfully applied our method to reproduce the observed velocity gradient of the lagging gaseous halo of NGC 891. The fluid stationary models discussed here can describe a hot homogeneous medium as well as a “gas” made of discrete, cold H i clouds with an isotropic velocity dispersion distribution. Although the method presented here generates a density and velocity field consistent with observational constraints, the stability of these configurations remains an open question.

A dynamical model for the extra-planar gas in spiral galaxies
Recent H I observations reveal that the discs of spiral galaxies are surrounded by extended gaseous haloes. This extra-planar gas reaches large distances (several kpc) from the disc and shows peculiar kinematics (low rotation and inflow). We have modelled the extra-planar gas as a continuous flow of material from the disc of a spiral galaxy into its halo region. The output of our models are pse...
متن کاملStationary Fluid Models for the Extra - Planar Gas in Spiral Galaxies
We show how to construct families of stationary hydrodynami-cal configurations that reproduce the observed vertical gradient of the rotation velocity of the extra-planar gas in spiral galaxies. We then present a simple model for the lagging halo of the spiral galaxy NGC 891, which is in agreement with the H i observations. Our method is based on well known properties of baroclinic solutions, an...
متن کاملEvaluation of New MOND Interpolating Function with Rotation Curves of Galaxies
The rotation curves of a sample of 46 low- and high-surface brightness galaxies are considered in the context of Milgrom's modi_ed dynamics (MOND) to test a new interpolating function proposed by Zhao et al. (2010) [1] and compare with the results of simple interpolating function. The predicted rotation curves are calculated from the total baryonic matter based on the B-band surface photometry,...
متن کاملThe Evolution of the Ism in the Mildly Disturbed Spiral Galaxy Ngc 4647
We present matched-resolution maps of HI and CO emission in the Virgo Cluster spiral NGC 4647. The galaxy shows a mild kinematic disturbance in which one side of the rotation curve flattens but the other side continues to rise. This kinematic asymmetry is coupled with a dramatic asymmetry in the molecular gas distribution but not in the atomic gas. An analysis of the gas column densities and th...
متن کاملExtra-planar Diffuse Hot Gas Around Normal Disk Galaxies
I review results from Chandra observations of nearby normal edge-on galaxies (Sd to Sa types). These galaxies have a broad range of star formation rate, but none of them is dominated by a nuclear starburst. The galaxies are all in directions of low Galactic foreground absorption (NHI ∼ < 4 × 10 cm). Extra-Planar diffuse soft X-ray emission is detected unambiguously from all the galaxies, except...
